How to Lose Fat Without Restricting Food - A Guide for Women
If you've ever tried to lose fat by cutting carbs, going on a liquid diet or dramatically restricting your food — you already know it doesn't work. Not long term anyway. You lose some weight, feel miserable, eventually cave and end up back where you started or worse. Sound familiar?
I'm Bianca, a holistic female online fitness coach, and my approach to fat loss is completely different. No restriction. No cutting out food groups. No feeling hungry all the time. Just eating more of the right things and letting your body do the rest.
The biggest mistake women make with fat loss
Not eating enough of the right foods. Most women trying to lose fat are under-eating — skipping meals, cutting carbs, avoiding anything they think is "bad" — and wondering why they're not seeing results. The irony is that eating too little actually makes fat loss harder. It slows your metabolism, increases cravings, depletes your energy and makes you more likely to binge. Restriction doesn't work. It never has.
What actually works — volume eating
Volume eating is the game changer that most women have never heard of. The idea is simple — you eat a large volume of food that fills you up, keeps you satisfied and gives your body incredible nutrients, while still being in a calorie deficit. Instead of eating less food, you eat more food — just smarter food. Think huge colourful salads packed with protein and vegetables, big bowls of Greek yoghurt with fruit and granola, large plates of lean protein with roasted vegetables and wholegrains. You feel full, satisfied and energised — and you're still losing fat.
The three pillars of fat loss nutrition
Calorie deficit — you need to be consuming slightly fewer calories than you're burning. But the key word is slightly — not dramatically. A small sustainable deficit of 200-300 calories per day is all you need. Crash dieting with a huge deficit slows your metabolism and leads to muscle loss which is the opposite of what you want. High protein — protein is essential for fat loss. It keeps you fuller for longer, protects your muscle while you're in a deficit and has a higher thermic effect meaning your body burns more calories digesting it. Aim for 1.6 to 2.2g of protein per kg of bodyweight per day. High fibre — fibre is your best friend for fat loss. It slows digestion, keeps you full and feeds your gut bacteria which supports overall health. Load up on vegetables, legumes, wholegrains and fruit.
What a typical day of eating looks like in a fat loss phase
Breakfast — Greek yoghurt with berries, granola and a drizzle of honey. High protein, high fibre, incredibly satisfying. Lunch — a huge salad with chicken, chickpeas, cucumber, tomatoes, feta and olive oil dressing. Loads of volume, loads of nutrients, keeps you full for hours. Dinner — lean mince with roasted vegetables, quinoa and a big green salad. Balanced, nutritious and genuinely delicious. Snacks — protein brownie balls, cottage cheese with fruit, rice cakes with peanut butter. Satisfying, high protein and no sugar crashes.
Does this look like restriction to you? It shouldn't — because it isn't.
What about carbs?
Carbs are not the enemy. I cannot say this enough. Carbohydrates are your body's preferred energy source and cutting them out completely leads to fatigue, brain fog, terrible workouts and unsustainable restriction. The key is choosing the right carbs — wholegrains, oats, sweet potatoes, rice, fruit — and pairing them with protein and fibre to slow digestion and keep blood sugar stable.
The non-diet factor that makes the biggest difference
Consistency. Not perfection — consistency. Eating well 80% of the time and enjoying the other 20% without guilt is infinitely more effective than being perfect for two weeks and then giving up. Fat loss is a long game and sustainable habits always beat short term restriction. Want easy high protein meal ideas to support your fat loss goals?
